One of the finest hymns ever written about evangelism is “Lead Me to Some Soul Today.” Its message is simple, yet it strikes the very heart of Christian responsibility. The opening words picture something present in all of our lives: “Friends of mine are lost in sin and cannot find their way.” Every day we interact with neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family members who need the saving message of Jesus Christ.

The apostle Paul understood this need. In Acts 17, while speaking in Athens, he declared that God created all nations and ordered the affairs of men so that they would “seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him” (Acts 17:27). Many people are searching. They may not know exactly what they are looking for, but they are searching. The question is whether we will be willing to help them find the Lord.

Jesus revealed the value of a single soul. In the parable of the lost sheep, the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to search for the one that wandered away (Luke 15:3–7). Heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents. Every soul matters to God. Every soul should matter to us.

The hymn also reminds us that evangelism begins with prayer. The chorus pleads, “Lead me to some soul today.” We are not only asking for opportunities — we are asking God to open our eyes to the opportunities already around us. Too often we become distracted by the routines of life and fail to notice those who are hurting spiritually.

The words of “Rescue the Perishing” echo the same truth: “Down in the human heart, crushed by the tempter, feelings lie buried that grace can restore.” Many people carry burdens we cannot see — broken homes, guilt, loneliness, addiction, despair. Yet beneath it all are hearts that can still be reached by the grace of God.

Perhaps one of the most sobering questions a Christian can ask is this: When was the last time I told someone about Jesus? We strive to live by the Golden Rule in our daily walk — but what greater act of love could there be than sharing the gospel that leads to eternal life?

The need remains great. Souls are still lost. The gospel is still God’s power to save (Romans 1:16). May each of us commit to praying daily, “Lord, lead me to one soul today” — and may we be ready when God answers that prayer.
